Hello!
Have you heard of a moon garden? If you haven’t heard of one, a moon garden is to be enjoyed at night by the moonlight. A moon garden is made up of plants of white and light colored blooms, that will open at night and shine with the moonlight.
Since I can’t start gardening yet. I have been planning for different garden projects that I want to do this spring. One of them is a moon garden, even if its just a small one. I think it would be pretty at the Simongetti North. When the skies are clear the moon shines bright.
Moon Garden Design
When planning your moon garden design, find a place where you can enjoy the moon garden and have access to it at night. A moon garden can be large or small, it’s up to you. A moon garden is usually in a place where you can see it from an outdoor sitting area like a porch or patio, or even a large window to see from indoors.
Finding the best place for your moon garden, you might want to spend some nights outside when the moon is out to see where the moon is shining the most. The object is to not make the garden bed look dark. It should light up with the moonlight. Also consider how the moon casts shadows, by adding uniquely shaped plants will look awesome in the moonlight shadows.
When designing any garden, don’t be afraid to use trees, bushes, shrubs and grasses. You can also add items like a gazing ball, solar lighting, white rocks or glow in the dark rocks, glow in the dark pots, to add more interest and pop to your moon garden design. I have listed some flowers for a moon garden.

Happy Planting!
As you can see there are many moon garden design ideas. The plants listed are just some to get you started and thinking about what you would want to plant for your moon garden. When picking your plants, make sure you pick for each blooming part of the season; early spring, mid spring to summer, early summer to fall, so the moon garden is always with fresh flowers.
Don’t forget to add other interests to your moon garden design, like solar lights, a sitting area, or glow in the dark rocks or pots. You could add a circle type arbor or a moon gate for the moonflowers to climb on, the picture has roses but you could put any white climbing flowers for your moon garden design. Creating a moon garden, looks like a lot of fun to me.

I am also planning to start a moon garden. And the main attraction will be moon flowers. I really like their trumpet shape and lemony scent. I read moonflowers are recommended for zones 9-11 but have flourished as an annual in northern zones. These majestic flowers grow on a vine and take flight mid-summer, unfurling in the dusk and staying open until dawn.
Hi Paolo,
I love the different options we have for moon gardens. I am in zone 5 and Moonflowers are an annual for us. I am hoping to incorporate Moonflowers in my moon garden as well. Thanks for the comments.
Thank you for this article, I have never heard of a moon garden before but it’s definitely something beautiful to have and admire, it’s really worth waiting for the full moon which brings out the magnificence and fragrance of flowers such as the moonflower and the angels’ trumpet. My gran is an avid gardener and I am sure that she will appreciate this very much.
Hi Jean,
Thank you for your comments. Yes they are a spectacular garden for admiring in the moonlight. Please share my website with other gardeners or people who want to get ideas.
I loved your suggested plants for a moon garden. I’ve just sent a message to the boss suggesting we should have one in our park. I’m waiting for her response.
Hi Yvonne,
Thank you for your comments! Having a moon garden in the park would be nice, but would there be anyone to see it shining in the moonlight? Stop back for more gardening tips and please share my site with other people looking for gardening ideas
Thank you for sharing these tips on flowers that would work well in a moon garden. I have been thinking about trying to create a potted garden that would survive on my apartment’s balcony. I was thinking about adding some 4 oclocks – which bloom in the evening. Yet the tips about using white or very light colored blooms are helpful. Thank!
Hi Sondra,
Thank you for your comments! A potted moon garden on the balcony would be awesome! Yes you need to use plants that open at night and white or pale yellow or pinks to shine in the moonlight. I am glad I could help!
Hi, I had never heard of the concept of a moon garden before. It sounds like a fascinating idea. It sounds like an invitation to create a truly magical space. You have given a vast array of ideas for all seasonal blooming times. I would really want to start with something simple though. One mistake I made with solar LED garden lights that is worth bearing in mind. I put a number of in-ground flat LED solar lights along a row of shallow steps we have out front. We chose the flat ones so we can ride over with the lawnmower. Unfortunately, the light shines up and blinds you so you can’t actually see the steps. I would suggest if anyone is putting solar LED lights into a moon garden to be very discrete, make sure the light is directed downwards otherwise the LEDs will just dominate the scene. Thanks for this very inspiring article. Best regards, Andy
Thank you for your comments! I am going to start a moon garden this year. I am not sure I am going to use lighting at all. Moon garden is supposed to be lit by the moon. Good idea for placing lights by steps. You need to be able to see where you are walking.
I love the suggestions that you have listed here to be planted for a moon garden. I have planted many white flowering shrubs in my garden, but you have listed several that I was not familiar with. I can still add flowers that bloom at night and definitely fragranced flowers. Angel’s trumpet sounds amazing with the blossoms opening at night and with an amazing scent. Great tips that you have for planting a moon garden.
Hi,
There is always room for more moon garden plants. Yes the Angel’s trumpet is awesome! Thank you for your comments.
